Fast Food Still a Big Hit!!!!

Today in American Society, eating at a fast food establishment has become a staple of our everyday lives. Despite most people knowing that fast food is “not good for them”, business still seems to be booming. If you have driven by a Burger King, Taco Bell, Arby’s or any other fast food restaurant recently, you will know what I mean. The lines looks like something you would see outside the mall at a 5:00 am shopping frenzy on Black Friday. It’s downright crazy. This is an interesting yet sad portrayal of what’s taking place in not just the United States but every industrialized country on the globe. Fast Food is literally taking over the world!!! Ok, maybe “taking” over the world is a bit extreme, maybe saying something a bit more factual, something like say, the fact that McDonald’s has over 30,000 restaurants worldwide and it still continues to open more and more franchises on an annual basis; 2,000  new ones a year to be exact. That is the equivalent of 5 golden arches popping up every single day! Now, I am no rocket scientist or Harvard graduate, but if you do the math, 2,000 more McDonald’s Establishments means a whole lot more people eating Big Mac’s, Chicken McNuggets, and the world famous french fries. Not that there is anything wrong with that, unless of course you are worried about your health.. But as I mentioned earlier, we all know that fast food is not good for us and yet the demand for the Extra Value Meals and the 99 cent menu is at an all time high. According to the Restaurants and Institutions Magazine annual report   “Top 400 Restaurant Chains of 2009”, fast food establishments are leading the way for our consumers. McDonald’s finished in a strong 1st place with over 70 BILLION dollars in 2009 sales. Yes folks, that is correct and it is not a typo. Let me repeat it. McDonald’s made over 70 BILLION dollars in sales for 2009, accounting for nearly one-quarter of the total sales among the Top 400 chains..Interestingly enough, every single restaurant in the top 10, this is out of 400 keep in mind, were all fast food establishments. Rounding out the top 10 out of 400 franchises in order were KFC, Burger King, Starbucks, Subway, Pizza Hut, Wendy’s, Taco Bell, Domino’s Pizza and Dunkin Doughnuts.  So needless to say, the demand for fast food is still there and it’s growing stronger and stronger by the day. As the New York Times Best Selling author of Fast Food Nation Eric Schlosser states, “A good boycott, a refusal to buy, can speak much louder than words.” This is great advice to mainstream America, however as the joke goes in the famous comedy Office Space, “Didn’t you get the memo?????” Judging by the numbers, I am assuming that most people didn’t get it… They must have been away from their laptop computers and fax machines just long enough to miss it.  I am guessing they were in the Fast Food Drive Thru placing their order…………
