DO NOT READ THIS if you are ever planning to eat fast food at McDonald’s again. A woman by the name of Karen Hanrahan bought a McDonald’s Hamburger in 1996 and still has it to this day. You may be appalled to learn that the actual beef patty she purchased 14 years ago doesn’t look any different than the day she bought it. The woman is a wellness educator, nutrition consultant, green advocate and writer. She did this experiment to help show her clients how unhealthy fast food really is. Keep in mind that a real hamburger, like one that you buy at a half way decent restaurant in most cities throughout the country, would have undoubtably disintegrated after just a few weeks or months. So the question arises, “What is really in McDonald’s 100% all beef patties?” I am guessing that a typical hamburger from McDonald’s has a boat load of preservatives to help keep it’s shelf life up. That is in fact, what preservatives are meant to do in the first place remember. You have to wonder though, how many preservatives must you put in a hamburger to “preserve” it for 14 years??? The woman reports that after all this time, the beef patty has shrunken up a little bit and has a very interesting odor but largely looks the same. I just cannot believe this story, no matter how much I really want to…. For this reason, I am going to do my own hamburger experiment. On February 9th, 2010 I purchased a basic McDonald’s Hamburger from the dollar menu and put it into a Glad plastic To Go Container with a snap on lid. I put the container on the top of a cupboard so it can remain at room temperature. I am happy to report that even after a week, it’s still looks and smells like I just bought it today. Yummy!!!! I am very interested to see what happens over the next couple of weeks. I will be sure to keep everyone posted. In the meantime, go check out some of the photo’s of this extraordinary thing. Just go to Google’s home page and type in 1996 McDonald’s Hamburger into the search. A huge list of “hits” will come up along with pictures of the burger in question. You can also go onto Karen Hanrahan’s website http://www.bestwellnessconsultant.com and find it there. Hope everyone enjoys this one…….
