After reading Maria Rodale’s book “Organic Manifesto”, I think its safe to say that I will no longer be eating conventional strawberries. The truth is, I don’t really want to eat anything that’s not organic for the rest of my entire life! What most people don’t know and NEED to be enlightened on is the fact that pesticides were created during World War II as a chemical weapon. That’s right, the very things that are being sprayed at mega doses on our countries crops were originally created to KILL people. Organophosphates, organochlorines, N-methyl carbamates, synthetic pyrethroid insecticides, fungicides and fumigants have been covering the lay of our land now for over 60 years. And just for the record they are doing an exceptional job. Too good of a job actually. These common pesticides are manufactured to kill insects, rodents, fungi and weeds. Unfortunately, they are also killing the humans that consume them. Conservative estimates indicate that the American agricultural system uses about 1.2 BILLION pounds of pesticides every year. If that’s not shocking enough, you can break that number down to about 4 pounds of the stuff for every man, woman and child. Now I am no organic bio chemist or anything like that, but ingesting 4 pounds of “chemical weapons” every year seems a little much. In fact the more I think about it, it sounds like it’s about 4 pounds too much. So here is 75 good reasons why you should try to choose organic whenever possible. (Just for the record, the title of this article could have been 1,000 reasons)
