10 Simple Tips to get the SEXIEST body of your life…

Just when I thought that America was making some headway towards the fight against adult and childhood obesity, I learned of some startling news. Despite 2011 being a record-breaking year in sales for the natural and organic food industries(which is a sure sign that times are changing), American waistlines are still continuing to grow at epic rates. In fact, recent numbers are indicating that we as a society are losing the battle against obesity. Statistics by the CDC are indicating that in upwards of 60 to 70 % of America is fat! I am simply blown away by this statistic and a bit shameful that my country I live in is in such bad shape. America is supposed to be a dominant country right? I mean, our military is the largest and most bad ass in the world. “America is one of the best places to live in the world”, say the masses. But unfortunately, a large percentage of our population is fat and pathetic. Yes folks, there is no way to sugarcoat this and I apologize if I offend anyone but something has got to change here. I live in the definitive healthiest state in America for a reason. There are endless ways to live a healthy lifestyle and more healthy people as a result of it. The funny thing here is that I don’t think people understand the difference in quality of life between being overweight and being of normal weight. Let me repeat myself as I have said in many past articles I have written. Being fit will improve ALL areas of your life. Fitter people of normal body weight typical have less stress in their lives, they are happier, more optimistic, do better at work, and excel in all areas of their life more than there out of shape counterparts. And if this is not enough to persuade you to throw the cheeseburger in the trash and buy a new pair of running shoes than maybe this will. There are literally hundreds of well documented and well referenced studies indicating that people who are in shape have significantly better sex lives. Sounds pretty good ehh? Fit people have a higher sex drive, more frequent and better sex and a significant increase in self-esteem about their body image. And as much as you don’t want to admit it, each year you wait the more difficult it is to get back into shape!

So the big questions here is what’s stopping you from making today the first day to your new life and new body? It really only takes 6 months(literally half a year) to make a big change that you can see. I am not talking about stepping on a scale here and weighing less either. Of course, if you get more fit you will lose a significant about of body fat and weigh less when you’re tipping the scale. But real motivation and excitement comes when you stand in front of a mirror naked and like what you see. I laugh with clients of mine all the time about this and despite people putting in hard work at the gym for different reasons, ultimately looking better without any clothes on is top priority for most. Even if people don’t tell me this straight forward, I know that not a single person will object to having a better body! This is reality. And you know what? Changing your body is also a reality. It is not that difficult to get something when you want it that bad. The more motivated a person is the quicker they get results, PERIOD! You could take most fit people and put them in a new body(a significantly overweight one for instance) and I guarantee that the person would be back to their old bodies within 6 months.Think of being really fit as a drug? The more you do it, the more you want it. Once you see what a sexy and fit body can do for you, you will never go back. All the hard work, change in eating patterns, whatever sacrifices you may make won’t matter in the slightest. And an important thing here is that at some point it becomes super easy to maintain your new body. I have 5 % body fat(yes ladies I have a six-pack) and I have been on cruise control for years, meaning I don’t have to do much to maintain my lean and hard body. Curious as to how I do it? I am guessing that if I told you you could go to sleep one night and wake up with a new lean and sexy body but it would cost 50,000 dollars, I bet that most people would go straight to the bank to take out a loan. This is how bad people want it! The funny thing is here is that it costs significantly less, but yet people seem to lack the motivation and determination to do it on their own. What gives here? Seriously? In reality it will cost a couple of hundred more bucks a month in your eating and about $65 to $85 on the high-end for a monthly gym membership. I have clients of mine who make the argument that they can’t afford to eat healthier or buy a gym membership or purchase a pack of training sessions from me and my response is always the same. Everyone spends money on what their priorities are right? So if you make living a healthier lifestyle a priority, money will seem to magically appear for the things necessary to live that lifestyle? I have been dead broke for a large portion of my life and one thing I have always had is a gym membership! Seriously, I have not had a pot to piss in at several points in my life but yet somehow I magically came up with the money for a membership. Make it a priority and you will some how magically find the money necessary. It’s that easy! Of course you will have to make sacrifices in order to get this new body and new healthy lifestyle.

Follow these simple rules and your NEW-SEXY-TONED and BETTER FEELING BODY is right around the corner!

1. Adjust your caloric intake daily based on your caloric expenditure. This is a no brainer here but most people never do it. Regardless of how many calories someone burns in a day, most people eat the exact same amount day in and day out. For instance, do you think you more burn more calories sitting at a desk all day at work or on your day off playing with your kids and cleaning your house? It’s not that difficult!

2. Avoid fake foods at all cost. The typical American Diet consists largely on things that I wouldn’t even consider real food. Cookies, cakes, pasta, chips and most common snacks are overly processed junk foods. They are made in laboratories and are horrendous for your health.

3. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Make at least half of your meals and snacks consist of healthy fruits and vegetables. This will help fill you up, increase the amount of fiber your consuming and just may help fend off that a future illness!

4. Rule of 5- This is one of the famous NY Times Bestselling author Michael Pollan’s Mantras here and a valuable lesson. Don’t eat things that contain more than 5 ingredients in them. How many ingredients does fish or broccoli have? Yes, the answer is one because they are “Real foods”.

5. Don’t eat things you can’t pronounce! Go down the snack isle at your local grocery store and read the label of a common snack food you normally purchase. I guarantee that there are numerous ingredients that sound like a chemical weapon from the Cold War. If you can’t pronounce them then don’t eat them. Period!

6. Learn to appreciate food. Most people just eat foods for the sake of eating foods. Learn to eat healthy things that you truly enjoy and make eating a sacred experience(because that’s exactly what it is!). I often find myself lighting a candle at the dinner table, cracking open a bottle of wine and truly savoring the experience. It’s not often that most people ever do this!

7. Eat at the dinner table! This seems a bit out-of-place but in reality people seem to eat everywhere but where they are supposed to. I once watched a gentlemen walk across a busy intersection with a brief case in one hand and a burning hot slice of pizza in the other. He was struggling with trying to walk, carry his brief case and eat without getting any grease or cheese on his suit. C’mon people! Take 15 minutes out of your hectic day to sit down and actually enjoy what you are eating.

8. Eat smaller more frequent meals. This is a great way to have constant energy and to turn your body into a metabolic fat burning machine. In a nutshell, your body gets use to being fed regularly so it learns to use the calories fast and efficiently.

9. Don’t starve yourself! Unfortunately, this is something far too many people do, especially women! The word diet comes from the Greek word “Diata” which literally means way of life. If someone goes on a diet, they should literally change their lifestyle. It does not mean starving yourself and going through a roller coaster patter of eating in order to lose as much weight as possible in the shortest period of time.

10. Get daily exercise. This is the missing link in most peoples daily lives. Start making it a point to do a form of exercise that you love each and every day. Notice here, I did not say go to the gym every day. Something healthy that you enjoy could mean taking a walk in your neighborhood or riding a bike to go grab some lunch. It’s that easy.

Why eating fewer calories will make you fat! If you have ever gone on a “Diet”, you have to read this….

As a cutting edge health professional in one of the most fit cities in America (Boulder, Colorado), it amazes me to still see so many people struggling to maintain a healthy weight. Granted, there are significantly less obese or overweight people in Colorado(18% statewide ranking them as the most “fit” state in the US), as there are where I grew up in New Jersey. But I still hear people talking the so-called “Diet” talk here in healthy town USA, many of whom are clueless on actually how to lose weight. Truth be told, more adult Americans are unhappy with their weight (recent statistics show somewhere in the ballpark of 65% Americans are overweight or obese) than those who are considered normal weight. So how do you really lose weight? The answer may surprise you and we will get back to that question in just a moment.

What upsets me most about being a health professional is to see how many people struggle their entire lives to obtain what seems like “Mission Impossible”.  If only people knew the true secrets to weight loss they would see how easy it was to get rid of the unwanted pounds.  And I really don’t think people understand how much a fit and healthy body would change their life for the better. I think this all the time when I walk by people in the street, in a coffee shop or at a restaurant.  Do you have any idea what losing 10, 20 or even 30 lbs would do to your life? Think about that for a minute.

Studies have shown that losing weight and getting back to your ideal body weight will improve ALL areas of your life. Fitter people who have an ideal body weight have more energy, have less chronic health problems, are sick less, have higher self-esteem, better and more frequent sex, more confidence at work, more successful in life, etc. The list goes on and on. So the big question here is this, What is stopping you from getting your ideal body? Seriously, think about that for a minute. Would if I told you that you could get this body in 6 months! What would you pay for that? The answer is most people would pay any amount of money for it because they want it so bad. And the truth is, people do. Plastic Surgery, Liposuction and the Diet Industry are all out there to help people get their “dream” body and its a multi-billion dollar industry annually. And you know what, the honest to god truth is you don’t need any of that to get your dream body!

So where does the whole “fewer calories make you fat” fall into place. Well, the #1 mistake in the diet industry is that eating fewer calories will help you lose weight. Might I respond by screaming “WRONG”! We all know people (especially women) who eat “dainty” portion sizes, skip lunch and breakfast, eat a sensible dinner and are still overweight. How is this possible? Well, I’m going to tell you how? Ever notice how fit people seem to eat ALL the time. Think of one of your friends who has a really fit and sexy body and observe their eating patterns.  What you see may surprise you! Fit people who are of normal/ideal body weight are calorie fueled machines. Whatever they eat seems to be burned off immediately and they never have a problem with their weight. I can personally eat 10 cheeseburgers a day and it wouldn’t matter, I would still have the lean and hard body that I have now at age 31. How is this possible? It is possible because I turned my body into a calorie burning machine. I eat ALL the time. I wake up hungry. I sometimes go to sleep hungry and I am hungry every couple of hours throughout the day.  And I EAT and EAT and EAT. Why am I able to eat this way and then you have the “dieter” who eats next to nothing and is constantly struggling with their weight. I will tell you why. If you eat infrequently, your body will recognize that once you are fed, it will be awhile before it gets food again. And remember our bodies crave food(or should I say calories) to help with its most basic function(which is to keep us alive). For this reason, infrequent eating causes your body to store absolutely everything you consume as fat, whether it be a Snickers bar or a mixed green salad. Remember here folks, fat is our bodies long-term source of energy. And if you don’t eat for long-term energy, fat is what your body needs to keep you alive.

Eat frequent and often(especially breakfast) and your food will literally begin to fuel your body like wood in a furnace. This is when your body becomes efficient at burning calories and you start seeing your weight drop. Period! Don’t trust me, try this quick Breakfast Experiment. Try waking up every single morning for two straight weeks and eating within a half an hour of waking. If you’re not use to eating breakfast, start with a slice of whole wheat toast, a bowl of fresh fruit and a cup of herbal tea. After 2 weeks, stop eating your breakfast and you will notice that your starved out of your mind within a half an hour of waking up. Your body in essence gets use to the calories in the morning and your bodies metabolism revs up in the process (burning more calories and fat). 

Then there is the exercise.  If you are eating frequent meals through out the day and you add in at least 1 hour of moderate exercise 5 days a week, you will see changes almost immediately.  Exercise is your FREE plastic surgery with no side effects other than looking better and feeling sexier than ever before! So here is what you have to do. Eat the way that I described in the beginning of this article.

Your exercise prescription is as follows:

-5 days a week of moderate to strenuous physical exercise (Find something you enjoy!)

– Each exercise session will be 1 hour-long (no more/no less)

– Each session should include 5 minute warm up, 5 minute cool down, 30 minutes of cardio, 2o minutes of high repetition/low-weight weight training.

 Follow this regime both on the eating and exercise end for two consecutive months.  After 2 months, strip down naked and dance around your house because your going to look and feel like a million bucks. It’s really that easy.  Once you get your body to the point where you feel happy and healthy(give it 6 months), it is a piece of cake to maintain. To many people’s amazement, it will only take 6 months to get the body of your dreams. The main problem with why diet’s fail is because no one can sustain a way of eating in which they feel deprived.  It is this reason that 95% of all diets fail within the first month of trying them.  The main reason why most people fail to stick to a regimented exercise plan is that they don’t see “results” fast enough. It is the American way to get things immediately and with an exercise plan it is no different. Many people work out hard for a month, don’t see any changes in their body and they quit. I have seen this time and time again and it is both upsetting and disappointing to the person. 

When people come to me with this problem, I usually ask them how many years it has taken for their bodies to be in the state that they are currently in. For many people, the answer is 10 years, 20 years or longer. Think about that for a minute. If you have been eating shitty and getting minimal exercise for a decade or more, how do you expect to work that off in a month?

My advice to you is this: If you want long-term lasting results, you have to give yourself at least 6 months to see noticeable changes.  The funny thing is most people aren’t willing to put in the time and effort it takes to be where they want to be. People would literally pay ANYTHING to get real results. It is this reason why I even have a job as a trainer. When people start to see results and you promise them more if they stick with you, the 10 packs and 20 packs of training sessions go out the door without me even having to barely mention it. In essence, results SELL themselves. 

So if you’re looking to make a big change in your life and your ready to do it, I recommend you start today!

 #1. Start buying healthier foods and eat more frequently. Do NOT  skip breakfast! Yes this will cost more money!

#2. Go out and buy a gym membership today. Even better, prepay for all 6 months up front because this is your commitment. The small price you pay for a gym membership will save you tons of money in the long run. Studies have shown that a gym membership actually saves you money in the long run in health related illnesses and expenses!

#3. This is the most important one. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF! If you truly believe that you can do this, you will! If you have doubts and feel that you won’t succeed with your goal, you will fail. All that really matters here is that you truly believe that you can get back to the body you were born to live in. No bullshit here. No gimmicks and no fad diets. Eating healthy and exercising regularly for the next 6 months will change your life FOREVER!

It’s amazes me how far people will go to lose a couple of pounds. Weight loss is like a drug, people seek out fast benefits that they can see almost immediately without ever thinking about the long term health consequences that go along with it. Take for instance the “New” and super controversial HCG diet featured on ABC, NBC and Fox News. The diet’s key ingredient is a hormone found in pregnant woman that is injected into the “dieter” to help that person lose weight.  Has our country gone mad! I mean seriously, are the people who think of these things utterly insane. Injecting yourself with a pregnancy hormone to lose weight. What is wrong with this picture! Just for the record,  anyone, and I mean ANYONE can lose weight by doing two simple things. Are you ready for it?? Here it is: Healthy Eating and Exercise. Yep, that’s it. Those are the only 2 things needed in this crazy world that are safe, effective and free. The last time I checked, it didn’t cost anything to go for a walk outside. And guess what, you are most likely NOT going to grow a third ear or develop a strange rash from walking. Back to the  HCG diet, proponents including M.D.’s argue that the diet works! HCG diet website’s claim that you can lose 20 lbs in 2 1/2 weeks or 40 lbs in 6 weeks.  As a personal trainer, health coach and nutrition consultant, I can tell you right now that this rate of fat loss is not safe nor effective long term. But back onto the diet, from what I understand it has you on a 500 calorie a day food deprivation plan. Hmmm, can we say STARVATION! I have found several internet sources and people talking about how they were on these 500 calories diets for 45 days or more. Think about eating half a hamburger for breakfast and than not being able to eat again until the next day. The average active person should consumer between 1,950 and 2,500 calories a day according to the American Council on Exercise, which is a leader in health and fitness and an organization I am certified by as a personal trainer. Problem is, what happens when you shift from  eating 500 calories a day (starvation mode) back to a normal caloric intake. I guess you are supposed to eat 500 calories a day for the rest of your life. No big deal. Forget about lunch and dinner. A breakfast of 2 eggs, 2 slices of whole wheat toast and a glass of orange juice would break those numbers. Just for the record, Calorie Restriction does NOT work and actually induces weight gain! Let’s not forget about that crazy hormone you have to take either. HCG is medically prescribed for infertility treatments as well as for delayed development in young males. This means that your diet can help with some development in those “special” areas, like say the prostate or ovarian cancer. I hope that this diet get’s dismissed as something that is actually safe and that HCG gets banned for “diet” specific uses. If it doesn’t, I’m sure that are rates of prostate and ovarian cancer will continue to rise to even higher levels.  Bottom line, don’t listen to all the BULLSHIT that the media is feeding us.
